Computer vision based AI can be very effective at creating alt text for the visually impaired. I’ve built those tools for social media, but a recurring request has been the ability to create complex, highly detailed descriptions for engineers, data scientists, historians, and others. In this ongoing series I’ll share several very high resolution images as well as the raw output used for testing. For more or to test the bot yourself, join the impossible patreon - or Substack subscribers, see below!

This is a complex enough graphic that it deserves a post of its own. The describer created two variants below - one at normal detail, and one with additional added. It would be possible to continue expanding the response. I encourage you also to zoom into the image and click around!

Normal Length

This infographic, titled "The Companies Disney Owns," presents a comprehensive map of the Walt Disney Company's worldwide assets, illustrating the diverse range of businesses and entities under its corporate umbrella. The graphic is organized into different colored sections, each representing various sectors and holdings, such as media networks, parks and resorts, studio entertainment, and direct-to-consumer divisions, among others.

At the center of the map is the iconic Disney castle silhouette, surrounded by the main divisions of the company. From there, lines connect to various bubbles detailing individual companies and brands within each sector.

On the top left, you see the Marvel Entertainment group, encompassing a range of properties under the MARVEL brand, including Marvel Studios, responsible for a string of successful superhero movies.

The top right portion of the infographic is dedicated to assets from the 21st Century Fox acquisition, such as the Fox Entertainment Group and various Fox-branded television networks, National Geographic Partners, and a stake in Hulu.

Below the center castle, there is a large section dedicated to Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products. This shows the various Disney parks and resorts across the globe, Disney signature experiences, and consumer products spanning from toys to clothing.

Adjacent to this, the Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International sector is highlighted, featuring streaming services like Disney+ and ESPN+, among other international media and entertainment holdings.

On the far left and right sides of the infographic, the Disney Music Group and Disney Theatrical Group are represented, indicating Disney's reach in music production and stage play adaptations of its popular stories and characters.

Throughout the graphic, different clusters are highlighted with specific color codes, providing a visual cue for categorization. For example, production studios, media networks, and distribution companies might be color-coded to distinguish them from each other.

At the bottom of the map, smaller entities such as Buena Vista Construction Company, and venture holding groups like Steamboat Ventures are shown, depicting the breadth of Disney's investments and operational interests.

The infographic serves not only as an organizational chart but also as an impressive display of Disney's expansive reach in various industries, from traditional film and television to parks and experiences, consumer products, and digital platforms. It suggests a corporate strategy focused on diversification and integration across multiple forms of entertainment and media delivery.

The design and layout are meant to be both informative and visually engaging, allowing viewers to appreciate the scale and scope of Disney's holdings and their interconnectedness within the larger conglomerate. Each brand and entity contributes to Disney's overarching presence as a global leader in entertainment.

Experimental Length

The infographic provides an exhaustive visual representation of The Walt Disney Company's assets, organized into a circular, color-coded map that radiates from the center. Each segment of the circle is dedicated to a specific division within the Disney empire, with individual assets represented by bubbles that are grouped together to form clusters within these segments.

At the center of the infographic is the Disney logo, serving as the nucleus from which all other entities branch out. Surrounding this central point, the first layer of clusters includes some of Disney's most prominent and well-known divisions. The Marvel Entertainment cluster is vividly highlighted in red, showcasing logos of its major superhero franchises, such as The Avengers, Spider-Man, and X-Men. These logos are not just mere symbols; they represent the cultural impact and the storytelling legacy that Marvel has built over the years.

Adjacent to Marvel, the Lucasfilm Ltd. cluster is bathed in a deep blue, with the iconic Star Wars logo taking a prominent position. This cluster also includes references to other Lucasfilm properties, illustrating the company's influence beyond the Star Wars universe.

The 21st Century Fox cluster is a tapestry of entertainment history, with logos from various film and television studios that have been brought under the Disney umbrella following the acquisition. This cluster is colored in a variety of blues, symbolizing the diverse range of content from news to entertainment that Fox has contributed to the media landscape.

The ABC cluster is a microcosm of Disney's television assets, with logos from ABC's vast network of stations and production companies. This cluster is marked with a lighter shade of blue, distinguishing it from the film-centric clusters and emphasizing its role in broadcast and cable television.

As we move further out, the clusters become more specialized, with each bubble providing a snapshot of Disney's reach into different sectors. The Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products cluster is a kaleidoscope of greens, reflecting the vibrancy and life of Disney's theme parks and merchandise. This cluster includes logos from Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and other international parks, as well as consumer products that extend the Disney experience into people's homes.

The Direct-to-Consumer & International cluster is a constellation of Disney's latest ventures into streaming and international markets. Colored in a sunny yellow, this cluster includes the Disney+ and Hulu logos, representing Disney's strategic move into the digital streaming space to compete with other platforms.

Each bubble within the clusters is meticulously labeled, with the logos scaled to fit the design while still maintaining their brand identity. The connecting lines between the bubbles and clusters are not just functional; they are a visual narrative that tells the story of Disney's organizational structure and the interconnectedness of its assets.

The infographic is framed by additional decorative elements that are quintessentially Disney, such as silhouettes of Mickey Mouse and other characters, reinforcing the brand's identity and its cultural significance. The design also includes cylindrical shapes and icons along the bottom, suggesting other affiliated companies or subsidiaries that contribute to Disney's global presence.

This visual map is not just an infographic; it's a comprehensive guide to understanding the scope and scale of The Walt Disney Company. It's a testament to Disney's evolution from a cartoon studio to a multimedia conglomerate with a presence in virtually every aspect of entertainment and media. The level of detail in the infographic invites viewers to explore each cluster, to discover the depth of Disney's portfolio, and to appreciate the strategic relationships between its diverse assets.
